A great candle wax formula!
Adding stearic acid to your home made candles can greatly slow down burn time, make candles burn brighter and longer. Here’s a recipe for you.
Take 1 part stearic acid, and 3 parts solid paraffin wax. Melt thoroughly, and pour into candles. You can add a few crayons for color or scent. I make unscented candles.
Make sure to use the right thickness of wick. Wider candles need thicker wicks. Most wicks are too thin for candles more than 2” wide.
Use a meat thermometer and let the wax cool to 125F then pour into candle molds. A higher temperature will cause the sticky tabs on the bottom of the metal wick bases to come apart.
Stearic acid is a white waxy substance that you can buy on Amazon, Ebay, possibly at hobby stores, and other online sellers.
Candle containers
You can use many containers for candles, anything that is thicker glass will work: hot fudge jar, jelly jar, canning jars, pickle or relish jars. Even older candle holders, just melt the wax, and add clear paraffin to it to use it again. Paper dixie cups can be used as molds for votive candles. Slightly larger plastic pudding cups also make great molds, just spray with oil before pouring wax into them.
