Folding@home (FAH or F@h) is a distributed computing project aimed to help scientists develop new therapeutics for a variety of diseases by the means of simulating protein dynamics. This includes the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins, and is reliant on simulations run on volunteers' personal computers.
This requires installing software on your computer and letting it run as a screen saver, when your computer is not busy. Your PC can be left on 24/7 if you want. It's for Linux, Windows, Mac. https://foldingathome.org/
Some of the diseases they are researching: https://foldingathome.org/diseases/
When you install the software you can pick what one disease you want to use your PC for. The software will then request “Work units” which your PC will process. You don’t have to run it only when the screen saver runs, you can run it all the time.
I have used this in the past with no problems.
