Another 1TB fake flash drive.

There are plenty of scams with flash drives, lithium 18650 batteries, and chargers on Amazon, Ebay, Aliexpress, and other sites. Here’s one I bought and tested from Amazon.

For a flash drive, this feels oddly heavy. They might fill it with epoxy or weight it down somehow.

I tested this with H2testw (a program to test USB drives for Windows). When you look at the drive in your OS the makers can make the chip inside report a fake size, so Windows will report this as a 1TB (1000GB) drive. However H2testw will actually write many files to the drive to tell you the real size. When writing a file fails, you have reached the physical limit of the drive. This drive is actually 40GB, a rather odd number for a flash drive. These are usually sized in powers of 2, so 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, etc.

I did not see any way to mark this item as a fraud but I did write a review of my testing results. I don’t know if this will get taken down or not.

So if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

I did buy a flash drive from Amazon with the brand Samdata. It did test out to the right size. However that does not mean it will last as long as major brands likes Sandisk.
