Morning Meryl, did not find my notes of course. But please see Wikipedia that has a good overview of all the argumentation techniques including various errors. Ad hominem would be when you attack the person instead of the phenomenon etc. They are classicals and called by their Latin names, since the Greeks were the ones that once elaborated rhetorics which the Romans gladly took over. They are used ever so often by lawyers, politicians, scientists in disputations, quarrels, court rooms and preferably in revealing the opponent and not using oneself.
